My Biography-Part Four-Bremen & Bremahaven
When My request to go back to Oberhausen was rejected, I felt highly depressed and fed up with my studies! I decided to go to Sprottauer Str in Detmold City in North-Rheine -Westfalen state where my cousin lived with his family as a refugee to spend some weeks.
In early part of 1986 I went to Bremen to visit one of my college mate,Manoharan !
Later on a sunny morning we visited the Bremerhaven(Northern sea-port in West-Germany) to see the ships enter into the harbor and leave out ! It was a niece thing to experience.The ships entered in one level of water and were taken to another water level inside the harbor by the way of pumping-in & out the water in between!When the ships left the harbor,the water level in between was raised-up to meet the sea level outside and when the ships came in the water level was raised-down to meet the sea level of the harbor inside without any serious problem!!I also visited the church in the middle of the city-center!! I returned to Dortmund after two weeks stay in Bremen.
One day during winter when I was sleeping in my flat in Flur str in Dortmund I head some noises in the next room where my new companion occupied. The time would have been around 22.00 hrs and it was very cold out side. I was under my quilt. I got up from the bed and peeped inside my companion's room. I could not believed my eyes. He was having sex with a German girl aged 16-18! I was shocked to see that scene! Somehow I managed to tap the door as I did not know anything! He opened the door after a while and grinned at me! I asked him why did he bring the girl to our flat. He did not tell anything directly to me instead he asked me in a huskier voice whether I would like to have sex with that girl!
I quarreled with the companion and one day he hit me and I went to the close by police station to report this matter. The police came with me to the flats and helped to collect my things and I was moved to another Srilankan guy's Wohnung! He was an unmarried and younger than me. He gave me temporary shelter. I thought the cultural differences of ours and the Europeans at that time! In Asia marriage was considered as sacred, socially and religious bounded and where none can indulge in sexual intercourse as light as the westerners did!
One day my "Seiko" wrist- watch stopped running. I could not find an answer at that time !There was no malfunctioning before.It was bought for by my maternal grandma in Srilanka before I boarded the flight to West-Germany! Later after a week I got the sad news that she died of illness in Srilanka on that particular day on which my wrist - watch stopped running! Believe it or not,but it was a true occurrence!
In the meantime my parents wished to find a bridegroom for my elder- sister at home. They wanted me to return to Srilanka to sell me off for money in order to marry-off my sister! In Srilanka there is a bad practice of getting dowry (hard cash and ancestral property ) from the bride's party for the consent of marriage from the bridegroom's party! My parents wished to use this social custom to dispose my elder sister who was an educated lady. If you were a girl, irrespective of your educational background and other things you would have to give dowry to your prospective bridegroom for the consent of marriage! My parents ordered me to come home immediately to finalize my sister's marriage to which I was going to be used as a scapegoat! I returned from Europe with a broken heart and sick mind! I saved some money for the construction of a bathroom and an overhead water tank in my sister's ancestral property. Thus my hopes in West -Germany came to an abrupt end because of my parent's foolishness!
