Expriences at the Royal Mail Sheffield Mail Centre!
I got a different type of experience at the Royal Mail Center,Sheffield when I worked there as a Christmas causal employee! The English people were very good and niece! In fact they are very serious in their work related matters. Now I can not remember the line -Managers' names under whom I worked but still I have got their glimpses in my memory! One line manager was very friendly to me and always called me "vivi". There was also a lady line- manager. She was very kind towards me and taught the worked related issues. At the beginning, I was asked to report for duty during daytime. The job was to sort the parcels & packets at the mail center to different mail sacks colored red, according postal codes! The international parcels were collected in separate mail sacks all together irrepective of their destinations!
There were long "Bath-tub" like collection tubs with small caster wheels and they were very difficult to move from one place to another! Some times it veers away! You would have to be very clever to manage them. For me it was very difficult to handle but when the days pass-by I learn t as to how to move them quickly and safely! The Christmas casuals" main job was to sort the big parcels, news letter bundles and packets by "standing for hours" and take them to delivery area and to stack one behind the other in an orderly manner in the bays designated for them! Later they were taken to the delivery lorries by another set of people!! The mail centre work was very hard and tiresome.Your legs would ache,if you work for more than six hours standing and you might feel resting somewhere by sitting! Because it was a new type of experience,I had difficulties but I persevered since I needed money for my survival and to learn Auto-Cad in Sheffield College. The life was very hard to me!
Because I was duty conscious, I was asked to work at nights in different shifts!! Th The job was to sort ordinary letters by sitting on permanently fixed stools and later stack them in movable shelves! Finally they were taken to a rolling mail sorting machines which sorted the letters according to their classes!
First class mails were despatched on the same day for delivery and second class mail were sent two days later! In the early stages I wrapped my dinner from home and later I used to eat at the canteen with others.
I worked with Somalians,Philippines,Pakistanis,Indians & Koreans all were students at the Sheffield University who needed extra money for their studies!! During my stay in the Sheffield Mail Centre, I moved with others in a friendly manner. All the permanent staff at the mail centre called me "Vivi" passionately! My life became economically prosperous due to my hard work at the mail centre!! Later I was offered uniforms and shoes and was made to work as a contract basis employee!!
